Common Name:   

 Red Ironbark / Mugga

Height: 10-30 metres.    

Spread: 10 metres.         

Habit: Medium tree.   

 

Family: Myrtaceae

Origin/Habitat: Typically found in drier open forests.

Foliage: Adult leaves 8-14cm ´ 1.5-3cm, dull green/grey in colour. Juvenile leaves are narrow and oblong in shape, with stalks, soon becoming alternate.

Flowers: Creamy or pink in colour, from winter to summer.

Other features for identification: Bark is black in colour, hard, thick and fissured. Buds are large and found in 7’s. Fruit is 5-8mm in diameter.

Soil preferences: Fertilise at plant out with 10gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Prefers moist, well drained or dry soils.

Cultural tolerances: Will grow from warm temperature to highlands zone in most soils. Requires full sun. Resistant to drought and frost; moderately resistant to salt winds. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a windbreak.

Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring.

Uses:      Firewood & Timber

Other: High fire risk with good post fire regeneration. Wood is tough and durable, good for heavy construction, stumps, posts and fuel.

Propagation: By seed.
