Melaleuca armillaris

Common Name: Bracelet Honey-myrtle / Giant Honey-myrtle

Height: 2-14 metres.

Spread: 5 metres.

 

Habit: Large shrub or tree.

Family: Myrtaceae

Origin/Habitat: Common along NSW coast to Wingan Inlet, Vic. Also found on islands off Wilsons Promontory.

Foliage: Dark green in colour, crowded, alternate, slender 12-25mm ´ 1mm, with a smooth edge.

Flowers: Nov-Feb. Cylindrical spikes 7cm ´ 2.5cm, cream in colour.

Other features for identification: Bark has a rough appearance. Capsules are 5mm in diameter.

Soil preferences: Fertilise at plant out with 15gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Prefers moist, well drained or dry soils.

Cultural tolerances: Will grow from subtropic to cool temperature zones in most soils. Adaptable to most drainage conditions. Adaptable to sun or shade. Resistant to salt winds and pollution; moderately resistant to saline soils, drought and frost. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the first line of a windbreak.

Maintenance requirements: Prune, and add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring.
