Habit: Small tree. Family: Pittosporaceae Origin/Habitat: Originally found in gullies in forests east of Westernport, is now extensively naturalized. Foliage: Leaves are shiny dark green above, paler beneath, 6-14cm ´ 3-5cm, with wavy edges. Flowers: Sept-Nov. Cream in colour. Other features for identification: Capsules are 10-15mm, smooth becoming orange with brown seeds. Soil preferences: Prefers a pH of neutral to acid. Fertilise at plant out with 15gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Prefers moist, well drained or dry soils. Cultural tolerances: Will grow from tropical to cool temperature zones in most rich soils. Adaptable to sun or shade. Resistant to salt winds and pollution; moderately resistant to drought and frost. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the second line of a windbreak. Common Pest or Disease problems: Spray for aphids are scale insects regularly. Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring. Prune when young to develop a single trunk. Uses: Propagation: Is by seed. |
