Common Name: Coast Banksia

Height: 4-20 metres

Family: Proteaceae

Origin/Habitat: Mostly found on coastal sands.

Foliage: Leaves are 4-10 ´ 1-2cm, dark green above, whitish below, with a smooth edge.

Flowers: Feb-July. Pale yellow in spikes 7-14cm ´ 5-8cm. Valves of woody cones open soon after maturity.

Other features for identification: Bark has a rough appearance.

Soil preferences: Fertilise at plant out with 10gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release.

Cultural tolerances: Will grow from tropical to highlands zone in most soils. Requires full sun. Very resistant to salt winds; resistant to saline soils, and frost; moderately resistant to drought and pollution. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a windbreak.

Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month fertiliser in spring.

Uses:   Ornamental , Bird Attracting , Windbreak & Coastal

Other: Medium fire risk. Moderate post fire regeneration.

Propagation: Propagate from seed in early spring of autumn.
