Habit: Medium tree. Family: Myrtaceae Origin/Habitat: NSW to NE Vic, and Gippsland. Foliage: Adult leaves 12-24cm, tapering to a fine point, green both sides, veins widely spaced. Juvenile leaves heart-shaped and stalkless, margins crenulate, grey green in colour. Flowers: Jan-May. White in colour. Other features for identification: Greyish in colour, scaly or short-fibred on trunk and large branches. Fruit 6-8mm in diameter, 3-4 triangular valves. Soil preferences: Fertilise at plant out with 10gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Cultural tolerances: Will grow from temperate to highlands zone in most soils. Requires full sun. Resistant to frost; moderately resistant to drought. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a wind break. Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month fertiliser in spring. Other: High fire risk. Propagation: By seed. |
