Eucalyptus largiflorens

Common Name: Black Box

Height: 10-20 metres.

Spread: 6-15 metres.

 

Habit: Small to medium tree.

Family: Myrtaceae

Origin/Habitat: Inland species. Forms open-forests and woodlands on flats subject to occasional flooding. Mark prior streams in Riverina.

Foliage: Adult leaves are narrow, 8-12cm ´1-2cm, thick, dull green (greyish) in colour both sides, veins faint. Juvenile leaves are very narrow, opposite to alternate, and grey-green in colour.

Flowers: Spring to summer. Flowers are cream or pink in colour.

Other features for identification: Buds 3-7 per cluster. Fruit 3-5mm, tiny valves enclosed. Bark is ash-grey to black is colour, hard, and fissured/scaly to small branches.

Soil preferences: Grey clays, or clay-loams. Will grow in moist well drained, wet or dry limy soils.

Cultural tolerances: Can be placed in a full or filtered sun position. Can tolerate heavy frosts.

Uses: Firewood & Timber

Other: Yields good honey. Wood is reddish, hard, heavy and durable. Good for posts and very good fuel. Good shade tree.

Propagation: By seed.
