Habit: Small to medium tree. Family: Myrtaceae Origin/Habitat: Common in Western Victorian goldfields areas, Brisbane ranges and around the Grampians. Rare in NSW. Foliage: Adult leaves 7-14 ´ 1.5-3cm, deep olive or grey green in colour. Juvenile leaves are opposite, heart shaped (may be joined) and blue grey in colour. Flowers: May-Dec. Cream or pink-red in colour. Other features for identification: Buds in 3’s on stalks. Bark is dark, rough, scaly at base, the rest smooth and pale with shades of yellow, white and blue grey. Soil preferences: Prefers a rich, moist, well-drained; dry or dry limy soil. Fertilise at plant out with 15gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K. Cultural tolerances: Will grow from warm to cool temperature zones. Requires full sun. Resistant to salt winds, saline soils, drought and moderately resistant to frost. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a windbreak. Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring. Uses: Other: Wood yellowish, hard ,strong and very durable. Good for posts, poles and fuel. High fire risk. Propagation: By seed. |
