Eucalyptus macrorhyncha

Common Name:  Red Stringybark

Height: 12-35 metres.

Spread: 10 metres

 

Habit: Medium tree.

Family: Myrtaceae

Origin/Habitat: Widespread on drier will-drained hilly sites.

Foliage: Adult leaves 10-16cm in length, thick, semi-glossy, dark green in colour on both sides. Less oblique than most stringybark. Juvenile leaves and opposite, then alternate. Ovate in shape with a roughened surface.

Flowers: Jan-April. White in colour.

Other features for identification: Bark is fibrous, grey on the outside, red-brown inside, persistant to small branches. Buds 6-12 per cluster. Fruit has a domed top, usually 3 projecting valves. 9-12mm across.

Soil preferences: pH of neutral to acid. Fertilise at plant out with 20gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Prefers moist, well drained or dry soils.

Cultural tolerances: Requires full sun. Resistant to drought and frost. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a windbreak.

Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring. 

Uses:        Firewood & Timber

Other: High fire risk. Wood is pale red-brown, fairly hard, strong and durable. May be used in light construction; fair fuel.  Good honey and shade tree.

Propagation: By seed.
