Habit: Tall, straight tree. Family: Myrtaceae Origin/Habitat: Usually found as pure tall-forest stands in moist mountain valleys, mainly south of Divide, in East Victorian highlands. Foliage: Adult leaves 10-17cm in length, shiny green on both sides. Juvenile leaves are opposite, soon becoming alternate, and broad. Flowers: Jan- March. White in colour. Other features for identification: Bark is brown in colour, sub-fibrous for 5-20 metres; then smooth, and white or pale grey-green above, peeling in long ribbons. Buds are found in clusters of 7-12, clusters are often found in pairs. Fruit usually has 3 small valves found at rim level. Soil preferences: Fertilise at plant out with 15gm of 18:2.6:10 N.P.K slow release. Cultural tolerances: Requires full sun. Very frost resistant; but tender to drought. Wind tolerance – can be placed in the front line of a windbreak. Maintenance requirements: Low. Add a 9 month slow release fertiliser in spring. Uses: Other: High fire risk, with poor post fire regeneration. Tallest hardwood (flowering plant) in the world. Propagation: By seed. |
